New Year’s Eve is almost here! I love New Year’s Eve. The celebrations, fireworks, fun. I’ll be with my husband and extended family this year. How are you celebrating?
No matter how you bring in 2020, whether you drink or not, your brand new shiny year could start with a headache or hangover. Even if you don’t drink, the late night itself will leave you and your loved ones feeling sluggish. Never fear, prevention is the key, and we’ve got 5 ways to prepare for the best New Year’s Day.
GET PLENTY OF SLEEP
According to one of my favorite websites, The Spruce Eats, one of the best ways to get over a hangover is rest. If you don’t have to work today, keep that blanket over your head and sleep in. If you’ve got a loved one with a hangover, put them back to bed, close their curtains and let them snooze it away.
HELP THEM HYDRATE
One of the reasons hangovers happen is because alcohol dehydrates our bodies. Rehydrating isn’t just about drinking water, although that helps. To truly feel better, we need to replace all the electrolytes we’ve also lost. Liquid I.V. is great for this. It’s a powder that you mix in water and it gives you two to three times more hydration than water alone, three times the electrolytes than sports drinks, plus vitamin C, a bunch of Bs, potassium, sodium and glucose. Living in Austin, Texas, can be dry, and I can get bad dehydration headaches even if I don’t touch any alcohol at all. When I feel a dehydration headache coming on, Liquid I.V. helps. The Lemon Lime is my favorite flavor, but you can also buy it in Passion Fruit and Acai Berry. Drink some on New Year’s Eve to prepare your body for the party, then replenish New Year’s morning. Share it with your loved ones too. They will thank you.
AVOID CAFFEINE
Sure, caffeine can be good for migraines, but when you’ve got a hangover, it’s believed that caffeine will make it worse. Caffeine is a stimulant, and while it’ll give you a temporary boost, the hangover will still be with you. Instead, ManageYourLifeNow.com suggests drinking tea with lemon, like this I Love Lemon caffeine free tea from Bigelow. Perhaps even better, get some Detox Tea from Total Tea for you and your friends. This tea is packed with echinacea for your immune system, papaya and cinnamon for a healthy digestive system, peppermint to sooth your stomach, gynostemma to help eliminate toxins and accelerate the metabolism, plus lots more.
EAT SPAGHETTI
Years ago, my husband was helping a friend through a particularly difficult time. It ended with one very drunken night, and my husband felt terrible the next morning. I did some research and read that spaghetti can help, and you know what? It did. It was actually the acidity in the tomato sauce, but the spaghetti was a welcome addition. If you’ve got loved ones feeling nauseous on New Year’s Day, cook up some marinara sauce and help them start to feel normal again.
TAKE A SHOWER
My husband swears by hot showers when he’s got a blazing headache. They don’t always work on me, but when my husband’s head is pounding, standing under hot water helps to ease the pressure. Any shower will do, but if you want to make sure it’s good, try this AquaDance shower head. It’s got 30 settings, including high-pressure and rainfall. It can help pound away a hangover headsache in no time.
No matter how bad you or your friends feel when you wake up on New Year’s Day, know that no matter what, you will feel better soon. Rest, relax, and rehydrate, and by Jan. 2, you’ll be ready to take on 2020.
