Belated Happy Towel Day! No, this isn’t the day we discuss the difference between hand towels and guest towels. Towel Day is in fact a fun holiday created as a tribute to Douglas Adams’ brilliantly hilarious book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and it was yesterday, May 25. I love this book. Not only is it inventive, it’s funny and even offers great satire about our own world. So to celebrate Towel Day, a guide of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy gifts in order.
If you’re new to Adams’ science-fiction masterpiece, it was originally written for BBC Radio and became a series of novels. It’s also been made into movies and TV shows. It follows Arthur Dent, the last human in the universe. He was rescued by a human-looking alien called Ford Prefect seconds before Earth was demolished to make room for a hyperspace bypass. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is their guide as they, well, hitchhike across the galaxy. And along the way, the very human Arthur Dent learns some very non-human things, including the importance of dolphins, the number 42 and, of course, towels.
Any fan will of course love a copy of the book, the audiobook version or the movie on Blu-ray. But for some more unique gifts, check out the items below. For extra fun, wrap them in a towel!
42 BEACH TOWEL
We have to start off the Towel Day gift guide with a towel! This Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy-styled towel has everything a fan needs: 42 (the answer to life, the universe and everything), the story’s classic “Don’t Panic” warning and, of course, the mighty useful towel. This cotton towel measures 55 inches by 28 inches and is reportedly made with no toxic substances. I think that makes it a towel the Guide would approve of. You can also get a microfiber “Don’t Panic” hand towel that’s 15 inches by 22 inches.
DON’T PANIC MUG
This 11-ounce mug will quickly let Hitchhiker’s Guides fans show off their fandom, including the advice about towels. The mug is has the “Don’t Panic” warning on one side and the alien designation of humans as “Mostly Harmless” on the other. Best, the mug is dishwasher and microwave safe for easy use.
DON’T PANIC BRACELET
This bracelet is now on my own gift wish list. Made of stainless steel that’s lead and nickel free, the bracelet has a Don’t Panic pendant as well as little planet. It measure 60mm diameter but can be adjusted on the wrist.
POSTER AND FRAME
This poster features some of the best lines from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy gathered in the helmet of the book’s robot, Marvin the Paranoid Android. The design is by pop artist Stephen Poon, matted and framed. You can also get the poster by itself as well as in a variety of sizes from 9 inches by 12 inches to 24 inches by 26 inches. Perfect Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy gifts for fans to display in their living rooms.
42 T-SHIRT
This shirt is not only a wonderful homage to the essence of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, it’s gorgeous. I love the design of the three circles embodying the book’s meaning of life, the universe and everything. And the gradiating colors is a nice touch. The cotton tee is available in black, navy, cranberry, Kelly green or brown in a variety of sizes.
SO LONG TEE
One of my favorite parts of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is when the dolphins are revealed to be the most intelligent beings on the planet, and they leave Earth just before it’s destroyed saying, “So long and thanks for all the fish.” This fantastic T-shirt celebrates that wonderful line with a great design. At first glance, it looks like a tourist shirt from Hawaii, but it’s so much more. You can buy the cotton tee in black, navy, brown, olive or dark heather.
DON’T PANIC GUIDE BOOK
Fans love to go behind the scenes of their favorite obsessions, and in the book Don’t Panic: Douglas Adams & The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, author Neil Gaiman discusses everything in the stories multi-verse: books, movies, plays, record albums, videogames… You name it. Adams said of the book, “It’s all absolutely devastatingly true–except the bits that are lies.” Which is so perfect. And yes, that is Neil Gaiman, author of Coraline, The Graveyard Book and co-author of Good Omens, which was recently made into a TV show for Amazon. So you know Don’t Panic will be as entertaining as it is interesting.
RADIO PLAYS
To really make fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy smile, get them the original BBC radio plays. This set features all the productions of “The Primary Phase,” “The Secondary Phase,” “The Tertiary Phrase,” “The Quandry Phase,” “The Quintessential Phrase,” and “The Hexagonal Phrase.” Plus it has a bonus CD of interviews with author Douglas Adams, remastered original music and the documentary Twenty Years of Hitchhiking. Your Hitchhikers Guide fans will love you forever.
