Wednesday is April Fool’s Day, and it couldn’t come at a better time. We could all use some laughs right now. Of course, laughs are good any time of the year, so if you’ve got a prankster in your life, you’ll love these April Fool’s Day gifts.
I’ve always wondered where April Fool’s Day came from, and it seems that it’s quite the mystery. According to History.com, some believe it started in 1582 when France moved from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. Anyone who was slow to recognize that the year now began on Jan. 1 instead of the last week of March through April 1 would become the butt of jokes.
No matter how it started, April Fool’s Day has brought out some incredible hoaxes:
- In 1905, the German newspaper Berliner Tageblatt wrote that thieves had dug a tunnel into the U.S. Treasury and stolen America’s silver and gold. The story spread quickly until it was recognized as a prank.
- In 1957, a BBC News broadcaster announced that Italy had had “an exceptionally heavy spaghetti crop,” complete with footage of people picking spaghetti off trees. Some viewers reportedly called in to find out how to grow their own.
- In 1989, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, a well-known lover of April Fool’s Day, orchestrated a flying saucer prank. It backfired slightly. Instead of landing in London’s Hyde Park on April 1 as planned, however, changing winds forced them to land in a field near Surrey. That’s where police found the UFO, with Branson and a silver-clad friend inside on March 31.
One of my friends is a HUGE fan of pranks and will be setting them up from now. For her and all your prank-loving friends, check out these April Fool’s Day gifts.
WINE BOTTLE PUZZLE
This is a drinking game for pranksters! Next time you give someone on your list a bottle of wine, give it to them inside this wine bottle puzzle. It’s a good thing the bottle is inside the puzzle, because they’ll have to be sober to solve the puzzle and get the bottle out. Put this on your list of April Fool’s Day gifts for brain teaser lovers.
DRINKING ANIMALS COLORING BOOK
Funny animals and cocktails make the best partners in this coloring book. But the best part is that the cocktails are actual recipes your friends can make. Like a giraffe toasting with a Cranberry Cosmopolitan, a chicken sipping a Frozen Coconut Mojito and a bear offering up a Champagne & Rum Cocktail. The coloring will get more creative the more cocktails have been drunk.
TALKING TOILET ROLL
Pranksters will get a kick out of this talking toilet roll spindle. It allows you to record your own message as many times as you want. Put it in the bathroom with a roll of paper on it, and listen to people scream in surprise. You can pull out your best potty humor for the message too.
BLAH BLAH BLAH BUTTON
For anyone who loves to say “blah blah blah,” this Blah Blah Blah button will crack them up. Press the battery-powered button and it says “Blah blah blah” in different funny ways.
TOILET MONSTER STICKER
For a prankster on your list, get them this toilet monster decal. They can turn all the toilets in their house into monster homes. Or get the sticker yourself and surprise your house guests. Either way, they’re good for a laugh.
REMOTE CONTROL FARTER
This is a gift my husband would LOVE. The remote-controlled Fart Machine No. 2 has a speaker and a remote. Hide the 3-inch speaker near someone, then you can set off 15 different fart sounds from up to 100 feet away. Luckily, it doesn’t come with a scent option.
MORSE CODE BRACELET
Giving a Morse code bracelet is like giving an inside joke only you and a friend share. The words on the bracelet are made with sterling silver beads, round and elongated for the Morse code dots and dashes. The beads are held on a waxed cord that’s adjustable for any size wrist.
BEST OF STUNTOLOGY
Offering up the best ways to prank people in meetings, at cocktails, at the dentist and more, the Best of Stuntology book has 304 pranks, tricks and challenges to amuse and annoy friends. There are chapters for the “Mildly Annoying To Highly Irritating,” “Amazements & Betcha Can’ts,” and “Ridiculous Games & Pointless Contests.” The instructions are as entertaining as the pranks, detailed in comic strips. Know someone who wants to learn how to write their name in the air with their butt? Make this book one of their April Fool’s Day gifts.
LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE
Doctors might not agree that laughter is the best medicine, but it can’t hurt. This book is a collection of the best jokes, quotes, anecdotes and cartoons from Reader’s Digest. The book contains 1,000 ways to make you laugh, or at least groan. Like, “What did the ill comic say in the hospital? ‘I’m here…all weak!'” Groan. This is just one book in a collection from Reader’s Digest. So you can get a few to make your friends keep on laughing.
GAG GIFT BOXES
Of course, you’ll want to complete the gift with a prank of your own by wrapping it in a gag gift box. There are loads of different joke gift boxes to choose from, like the Earwax Candle Kit, Hide-A-Poo rocks, and Pet Butler, but this Cheese Printer is my favorite.
